Reubin Burney

Kevin Odom

My name is Reubin Burney. I am 68 years young. My life motto is “Just don’t live, thrive!” Thus the seeds were planted and nourished that resulted in becoming a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor more than twenty years ago. My career began the stage of flourishing in New York where I lived for 38 years. At local hospitals I gained experience working in psychiatric units, ( behavioral care) detox units, outpatient treatment, and medication assisted treatment. In 2012 I returned back to my home state of North Carolina, where I have the opportunity to continue my career working in medicated assisted treatment, focusing on helping individuals who are addicted to opioids such as fentanyl.

Also I have a small business wherein I utilize my 20 plus years of experience performing substance abuse assessments for the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. I also am a substance abuse professional (SAP) authorized to provide substance abuse services for Department of Transportation employees.
My name is Kevin Odom, and like Reubin, my mottos are – ‘One Day at a Time’, ‘Easy Does It’, and ‘You learn from making mistakes.’

Early on, life showed up, and I was fortunate enough to make a lot of mistakes in life. Those mistakes, and seeing families and relationships destroyed due to drug addiction and alcoholism, fueled my passion to become a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS), and a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS).

I began working in January 2019 with Reubin, and he taught me a lot clinically. He showed me what it means to ‘be yourself’ as you practice therapy, and being humble enough to make mistakes in the field of counseling. I started off working in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorders (OUD) and I’ve since been able to work my way up in the field in various positions from Clinical Supervisor to Program Director. Once I left from being a Program Director, I worked in outpatient treatment for a while, and I had the pleasure of learning how to write and implement policies, engage in business and community relationships, sign contracts with various insurance entities, and many other relevant tasks associated with opening a business. I left there and I worked in the immigration system for a while, and now I work on an inpatient unit at a hospital in North Carolina.

Recently, I opened One Moment, PLLC, and through the work of both Reubin and myself, we decided to start a podcast, to help being awareness to mental health, substance use, suicide, and many other related topics that we discuss in the field (i.e., ethics, supervision, etc.).
